November 9, 2007
Our 6th Annual FedEx United Way Pick Your Partner Bass Tournament was held on Pickwick Lake the morning of October 27, 2007. The air temperature was in the 40's, the wind was out of the East, fog had set in, and the fish were feeding on a full moon from the night before. At 7:10 the blast off began with 146 teams on their way by 7:40. Although we were delayed twenty minutes due to the fog, all boats were able to safely travel from the blast off area to their favorite fishing holes.
First place honors went to the team of Randy Haynes, of Counce, TN and Tony Browning, of Renzi, MS, with a weight of 17.78 lbs. They caught their fish in 10-12 feet of water dragging a Carolina rig. Randy said they caught 20 keepers throughout the day and the magic bait remains their secret. Second place went to Gordon and Jon Hardin of Savannah, TN. They started out with top water baits early that morning with no success. They later made the move to the ledges and stayed on that pattern the rest of the day. That turned out to be a good decision and provided them with a second place stringer of 15.89 lbs. Their lures of choice were 10 inch Texas rigged worms and deep diving crankbaits. Alan Langford, of Pontotoc, MS, and Shan Payne of Saltillo, MS, captured a nice 14.91 lb. stringer of bass to take home third place. They did not have a keeper in the boat until 11:00. They found an area in 18-20 feet of water that held some nice fish and fooled them with deep diving crankbaits on super light line. Big fish honors go to Shane Anderson of Iuka, MS, who weighed in a 5.65 lb. largemouth. Our final tournament results show 183 bass, weighed in by 61 teams, giving us a total weight of 464.9 lbs.
We were able to raise over $13,000 for the United Way with the help of hundreds of fishermen, many outstanding sponsors, and lots of dedicated volunteers. Special thanks go out to Tony Lewis of Oxford, MS. Tony is our number one cash sponsor and without him we would not be able to guarantee our prize money. Since our first tournament was held in 2002 we have raised $51,357.00 for The United Way! Our event was started to just raise the awareness for The United Way and today it is one of the largest charity events in the mid-south. Next year's tournament will be held at Pickwick Landing on October 18, 2008. Entry forms will be mailed by the end of 2007. You will be allowed to enter next year's event by mail or PayPal beginning January 15, 2008.
Thanks again for everyone's support and we hope to see you next year!
